NEXHYMN – Black Horizon CD

@@@.5

Air raid sirens and a hail of machine gun fire open the gates and welcome the oncoming  clangor of war.  There is no way you could not compare NEXHYMN and their style of death metal to the savagery and destruction of warfare.  With the explosive cluster bomb-like double bass maiming all in its path and the incendiary attack of the guitars there is little doubt that these guys (and one girl) mean to invoke butchery.  One concussive track after another makes Black Horizon a powerful work that highlights NEXHYMNs ability to write powerful tunes.  Creative and complex but keeping the onslaught non-stop with its old-school death metal sensibility.  The musicianship on this is great, as you would expect because NEXHYMN is made up of some long-time death metal devotees.  Guitarist Ivan Alcala has been laying down a heavy barrage of metal since at least the late 1990’s with his earlier band, THROCULT.  Out in front of all this metal mayhem are the guttural vocals of Holly Wedel.  While her vocals are powerful and churning in their own right, it feels a bit like she is holding something in reserve.  I can tell there is even more power and dynamic range just below the surface.  Add the rumbling threat of the pounding bass and you have some killer extreme death metal that is relentless and grinding.  The clear production on Black Horizon is superb thanks to Jeff Alexis at Hellfire Studios and Dave Otero at Flatline Audio and NEXHYMN show without a doubt that they are ready to roll out and lay siege to our senses with no restraint.

The blackened apocalyptic visions put forth by NEXHYMN are obvious with song titles such as Decaying Monument and Exquisite Plague but I wish there was a lyric sheet included so that I could better grasp their content.  The art is grim and to the point and really captures the whole vibe of NEXHYMN.

So, if bands offering up technical and extreme metal like NAPALM DEATH, SUFFOCATION and BENEDICTION are your thing, then this will be right up your dark alley. (val)

MASSMORD//SHADES OF GREY- Split 12”

This split features two melodic crusty hardcore bands from Sweden. Shades of Grey put out a demo some time back but here we have their first vinyl release. Their charging forward style seems like it would make for a great live performance. To be honest they look cool in their pictures on the liner notes, my kind of folks. Fucking raging punk rock, it just never seems to get old. For Massmord this is their sophomore effort. This five piece’s brand of hardcore punk will explode out of your speakers like angry red lava from an overdue volcano. Massmord’s 6 songs of down tuned melodic hardcore makes a perfect match with Shades of Grey’s energetic rage-fest. Actually they may match just a bit too closely. If there is one negative to this record, it is that they share too much. Sometimes, even after multiple listens, I find I have a hard time telling one side from another. Neither side is bad, just very similar. Both bands feature down tuned blasting guitars backed by thundering fast drums and blaring angst filled vocals that attack you with their violent intensity. The two bands feature melodic breakdowns that snap back with breakneck intensity accented by socio-political lyrics. Their similar sounds bring to mind bands like From Ashes Rise, Momentum, Tragedy, etc. The record cover art that Moa Holmin and Anna Ohrn did for this split is killer. Illustrations of piles of skulls, gears, gasmasks and a starving child standing in front of a chemical plant paint a glib picture of the future. If this style of punk is your jam, than this record is definitely for you. (Attucks)

OVERKILL does it again with ‘The Electric Age’!

OVERKILL – The Electric Age CD

@@@@@ 5 Anarchy @’s out of 5!!!!!

OVERKILL has been one of my favorite bands since I heard them way back in the 80’s.  My introduction to them was on one of the Metal Massacre comps and the song ‘Feel the Fire’.  ‘Taking Over’ was and still is my favorite album of theirs, it was fucking fierce! The “hey-day” so to speak was probably in the ‘Elimination’  / ‘Horrorscope’ days as that is what most people look to when comparing OVERKILL’s impressive body of work to itself.

‘The Electric Age’ is their 16th album!…And I have all of them.  I was pumped in the days leading up to the release of this highly anticipated album.  It’s predecessor ‘Ironbound’ was easily OVERKILL’s best album in over 20 years, it rivaled the greatness of some of those earlier releases.  So with that said the big question was would ‘The Electric Age’ be able to live up to such a giant of an album?  The answer is a simple yes.  It does live up ‘Ironbound’ but does not top it.   I’ve listened to the album about four times now and although the album is kicking thrash metal ass all over the gutter I haven’t found anything that stands as strong as ‘The Green and Black’ or even the song ‘Ironbound’ itself.

‘Electric Rattlesnake’ is a catchy thrash tour-de-force that drops into a killer SABBATH riff/breakdown before really chilling out.  It revisits the SABBATH riff and then kicks it back into full blown intensity, smoldering guitar solo and all!  This song itself puts most of the young retro-thrash new starts in their place.  This is how it’s done…son.

‘Save Yourself’ is another MOTORHEAD driven punk influenced number that again recalls OVERKILL’s earlier years.  Even the vocal delivery is so classic OVERKILL, I am getting all teary eyed listening to this one…’Drop the Hammer Down’ even revisits ‘Feel the Fire’.  Listen to that break just before the solo and you hear exactly what I mean.  Fuck yeah!

My buddy Joseph commented on how energetic the band is and that is no joke. Blitz goes to town on this record belting it out like a hesher half his age!  They have kept the same line-up for the last three releases now and it is really paying off.  The band is TIGHT.   Derek Tailer and Dave Linsk are straight up badasses that have earned a place in metal history as one of the great guitar duos.  These dudes play for keeps and with DD Verni holding down the low end flawlessly as he always does OVERKILL are a top notch wrecking crew that cannot be stopped!

Although the line-up for Killfest looks pretty week I am super stoked to see these New Jersey thrashers bring it live.  Not a lot of bands get a chance at making another run at it.  OVERKILL never went away and always stayed hard and heavy, but they are back on the top of their game.  They have proved that ‘Ironbound’ was not a fluke and that they still have “it”.  I am so stoked to be here celebrating this achievement and this album with them.

As far as thrash metal goes this is the album of the year at this point!  Are they going for a repeat?  ‘Ironbound’ earned metal album of the year in many circles.  Will ‘The Electric Age’ see the band recapture the thrown?  So far my vote is with Blitz and crew!  Wrecking Crew that is!

TERRORIZER – Hordes of Zombies

TERRORIZER – Hordes of Zombies CD

@@@.5 Anarchy @’s out of 5

What do the MORBID ANGEL dudes do when they aren’t putting the MARILYN MANSON mix to their death metal?  They blast out some grindcore and make TERRORIZER albums with their friends in RESISTANT CULTURE.

My first thoughts are 1) the last album kind of blew.  Those triggered drums were just too much!, 2) The album title is kind of played out…

My initial response to my first note is that these dudes must have read some of the reviews on that last album and made an effort to correct that weird ass drum sound that plagued the “reunion” album.  The drums sound full and punishing.  Pete Sandoval is killing it behind the kit on this one, it’s nice to hear him do his thing without as much studio “magic”.

And to my second point they use zombies as more of an analogy to describe the mindless sheep and general population of this rotting country and the of world as a whole.  The cover art is pretty cool with all the zombies staggering through the city, LA I suppose.  There is pope zombie, a soldier zombie, a crusty/metal looking zombie and a spikey haired punk rock zombie as well as a slew of others, they are the hordes I take it.  There is even the RESISTANT CULTURE symbol spray painted on one of the buildings.  In summery I’ll let the album title slide…BUT THAT’S IT!  No more zombie album covers, songs or record titles after this that has zombies in it by anyone!  Yeah…right…

Again since the drum problem was apparently solved we can focus on the rest of the tunes.  The mix is pretty damn clean, most of the grit and grime and crust has been wiped away in favor of slick and smooth production.  I fear it is a bit too smooth for many and we’ll hear a lot of complaints even though the drums have been fixed.

But lets face it folks.  This is not ‘World Downfall’, there was a perfect aligning of the moons and stars that allowed for that classic mix of Death Metal and Grindcore to exist!  Jesse (RIP) has moved on, his riffs and style are gone…

Katina had some big shoes to fill and she stepped right up to the plate.  Katina is a badass and she lets it rip on ‘Hordes of Zombies’.  There is no looking back as she rips through more than a dozen headbanging string benders driving the TERRORIZER bus over zombies and sheeple .

The vocals are gruff and rough, always stopping shy of the growl but always intelligible.  Anthony doesn’t stray far from what he does in RC vocally or lyrically.  The lyrics are social and political commentary, but what I always like about his style is that he offers glimpses of hope.  His songs are warnings to change our ways, to be aware and cognizant of whom we are and our impact on the environment and available resources.

All in the album is decent but it lacks texture or layers.  It is no frills straight up, polished to perfection grind.  There are no crazy guitar parts, no freaked out vocals, it’s all just kind of flat.  There is not much to make one song stand out from the next.  I don’t know if that’s enough in today’s world.  Some of these young grind bands are doing crazy ass shit that makes this seem really tame in comparison.

GOMORRAH – Thrashed Out of Hell CD

@@@ Anarchy @’s out 5

“WARNING – Contains Heavy Metal”   Hell yeah! That’s what the sticker on the cover says…These young thrashers  were at the Mouth House the other night opening for PDX metallers SPELLCASTER.  I’m pretty sure that at the show they were a 3 piece, on this disc they are a four piece.  I grabbed a copy of this disc up at Black N Read yesterday while I was up there for vinyl fix…Anyway…All the elements of a bitchen’ thrash band are here, but they are not all quite in the right place.   Live they killed it!  But some of that aggression and power is missing.  The mix is demo quality at best leaving me a little let down.  Live they were tight and fierce, but here the performance is a little loose.  I expect that since this CD is from some time last year that they have learned a lot about jamming together and it’s shining through in the live shows.  The singer/guitar player even did the whole set with this leather jacket on.  Fuck yeah!  Thrash of be thrashed buddy!  My point at the end of this rambling is that although this CD is not essential you should make a point to catch them live and also be on the lookout for a new CD in the near future.  If these young dudes stay focused on the metal they will be essential.  And essential is good.   (Josh Mosh)
